The UN has expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Benue State and is closely monitoring the situation.
According to reports, UN Condemns Benue Bloodbath, Tasks Nigerian Government To Fish Out Perpetrators, Benue state, was hit by violent attacks at night, with reports indicating over 200 civilians killed or displaced during the weekend.
In response to the information, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said:
“We’re monitoring the situation,”
“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended.”
This unfolds against a backdrop of escalating outrage over the violence and the government's perceived failure to contain the bloodshed.
In a similar statement, Amnesty International expressed outrage, highlighting the attack's severity, and questioning the effectiveness of the government's security claims.
The human rights group condemned the escalating humanitarian crisis, urging Nigerian authorities to urgently stop the violence and hold those responsible accountable.
